Shortly before the pandemic known as Covid-19 hit TN and shut down our comings and goings, the Wednesday Morning Crew (or just Wednesday Morning Bible Study at HWY 231), was walking and studying through the book of Revelation. This was a truly fascinating study, that I have gingerly attempted to pick up in my personal study time. One thing I have learned is that there is a loving Creator who didn't inspire the writing of this book in order to terrify us (as many of us are), but rather to help us to see His kingdom in new ways.
The daily effects of the pandemic have been felt strongly by my children. The term "social distancing" is one that angers and confuses them. No matter how many times we attempt to explain to them the reasons behind the cancellation of so many of their favorite events and the closure of some of their favorite places, they just have more questions. If I am being completely honest, so do I.
Were they to understand the word in its modern existence, they might say this time has been seemingly apocalyptic. They would not be alone in this! There are some questioning if we are seeing signs of the end times through this pandemic as so many of our norms are being halted, switched and flipped.
Good teachers know how to begin a study, especially one of this magnitude, with a few definitions in order to create a baseline. One of the first words that we defined (both during the in person study and in my own time), was apocalypse. This was crazy interesting. So the biblical definition of this word is NOT what we think of generally (destruction and end of the world as we know it), rather this word simply means uncovering or unveiling. There are so many uses of it in scripture but here's a short list:
In each of these times, God is revealing (or uncovering) something for humanity to learn and use to change how we see and operate in the world around us.
If this is truly what this word means, how does it apply to our current situation (namely social distancing in an effort to slow the spread of Covid-19)?? Let me ask this same question in a different way. What has God revealed (or uncovered) to you during this current pandemic?
This might be a great discussion to have with your kids. What have you learned that will affect your view going forward on the world in light of Covid-19?
Mine? God is still on the throne and He is still sovereign. This pandemic may have surprised humanity, but it did NOT surprise Him. He still commands the land and the sea. And He still has the whole world in His hand!
What is your revelation?!?!
